At Square One Law we’ve continued to invest in future talent with the promotion of several trainees and the recruitment of a further four into training contracts and apprenticeships, as we look to help more people forge careers in the legal sector.

Walter Marufu has completed a two-year training contract having successfully gained experience across all key departments and has qualified into our Commercial Property team. He joined our trainee programme in 2021, during the pandemic, and has proven to be a valuable addition, becoming the latest in our trainee scheme’s many success stories.

Kimberly Crossman, who joined us as a Construction Paralegal has also qualified and has taken a role as a Solicitor in the Commercial Property team having been supported through the CILEX route to qualification.

Since its launch several years ago, we’re happy to say that our trainee programme has proven to be a success, and three new trainees have been awarded training contracts in this year’s cohort of new starters.

This includes Dominika Cudak and Declan Fahey, who have joined our Newcastle office, and Amelia Smalley, who has been promoted from a Paralegal role and will be based at our Leeds office.

We value being able provide apprenticeship opportunities for people early in their careers, with Kyle Taylor having recently joined us as a Paralegal Apprentice.

Gill Hunter said: “We are thrilled that Walter and Kimberley have completed their traineeships. It is testament to their exceptional hard work and diligence. We’re also really pleased to be giving a very warm welcome to Amelia, Declan, Dominika and Kyle.

“As a firm, we deeply value the importance of diverse ideas, backgrounds, and experiences, which is why we continue to invest heavily in the expansion of our apprenticeships and traineeships to help more people break into the profession.

“Traditionally, the legal sector has always been incredibly attractive, but for a multitude of reasons, the pathway for many people has been full of obstacles and difficulties.

“That’s why programmes such as this play a key role in helping us address the legal skills gap and we have every confidence that Amelia, Declan, Dominika and Kyle will go on to be a success, just like Kimberly and Walter before them.”

Securing a traineeship is one of the biggest obstacles facing aspiring solicitors when it comes to breaking into the legal sector.

According to research by The Law Society, yearly trainee registrations dropped by 2% to 5,495 in 2021 – the lowest in the past five years.

And for those outside of London’s commuter belt, it is even tougher, with Greater London alone accounting for half of all registrations. With this in mind, we’re very happy to be able to be able to provide training opportunities across the regions in which we operate.

Walter Marufu, one of our newly qualified Solicitors commented: “I am excited that I have completed my training contract and I’m really happy to have qualified as a Solicitor into the Commercial Property team at Square One Law. The support I have received throughout this journey has been brilliant. As someone who has come a long way to achieve this qualification, it truly means the world to me. I am genuinely excited about the future and incredibly grateful to my colleagues and managers for their outstanding training, which provided me with countless opportunities. I cannot contain my enthusiasm for the times ahead in my new role as a commercial property solicitor. Having worked across the Square One team for the past two years, I feel ready to hit the ground running.”
